To look inside - to get a glimpse of the usually unseen - this is one of the benefits of the art I make. I seem to be more attracted to the voice of the individual - even in music: the soloist speaks with much more meaning and appeal to me than the orchestra. Through the making of marks much is revealed about the author of the marks - possibly in the way of the revelations of a handwriting specialist.
I am interested in our human/animal being experience in the world - how it feels. And the beauty of it all - from light to heavy.
What I'm seeking is a visual vocabulary with which to express that which seems meaningful to me. Of course I love the pure quality of surface and marks and paint or whatever medium is used, but I no longer want to make what a professor of mine referred to as "wallpaper." All this involves figuring out my way to combine the abstract with the more specifically figurative.
I have large heroes: Rico Lebrun, Leonard Baskin, Velazquez, Francis Bacon, Manuel Neri and Joan Brown.
Just to keep trying is really the thing.
